SOAP May 7th - Proverbs 7
May 07, 2008
SCRIPTURE: Prov. 7
OBSERVATIONS: Chapter 7 is a rarity in Proverbs in that it deals extensively with only one topic, and that topic is the adulterous woman. Why is there no instruction on the adulterous man? Because most all Scripture books were written for men. (Sorry, ladies, but the prevailing belief even up to the last century was that women were incapable of grasping abstract truths. So appreciate the radical actions of Jesus in discussing theology with a promiscuous, Samaritan woman in John 4). Here is a laundry list of all the blunders adulterous people have used then and now
APPLICATIONS:
v. 8 - The dude is window shopping for sin. He's not ready to do the deed, but he's hanging close.
v. 9 - Beware of night! That which is stupid in the light of day becomes not so dumb at 10 pm, a good idea at midnight, and pure genius at 2am.
v. 14 - She feels justified because she just paid her dues to God. I've heard that a statistically high number of sexual mistakes happen to Christians right after a spiritual "mountaintop"
v. 15 - "Oh, I just happened to run into you! It's destiny!" If you want something bad enough, you'll interpret the events to be falling into place for you, as if God is orchestrating it. When in fact, YOU are.
v. 18 - Selfish acts of lust smell nicer when you call them LOVE, cause what's holier than love? It's all about love, baby...(nausea)
v. 19 - "It's not her fault...her husband doesn't pay attention to her. I must meet her needs". No matter what the situation, God NEVER asks us to meet someone's needs sexually, unless we're married to them.
REST of CHAPTER - A few moments of fun can wreck the rest of your life. Learn to rise above the blind moments of lust or you're in for a steady parade of pain.
PRAYER: Father, Be an ever present voice in my head when lust creeps in. Remind me to not even get close to tempting situations and remind of the pain that will ensue if I give in.
